This memorial window by Toon Verhoef was revealed by erstwhile queen Beatrix on May 4, 1995 at De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam, as part of the national commemoration ceremonies on this day. The window was commissioned by the Nationaal Comité 4 en 5 mei, as a celebration of fifty years of freedom. Toon Verhoef was invited to design a stained-glass memorial window that would commemorate the victims and casualties of the Second World War on one hand and celebrate the regained freedom and hope for a peaceful future on the other hand. The result is a contemporary piece of art, that is still very much connected to the past, in part by holding on to its original form and Gothic elements.
